Michelle Visage, born Michelle Lynn Shupack on 20 September 1968, is an American television personality, radio presenter, singer and media figure. She is best known internationally as a long-standing judge on RuPaul’s Drag Race, where her direct critiques, distinctive appearance and outspoken personality have made her a familiar face in entertainment.
Visage grew up in New Jersey and developed an interest in music, performance and popular culture from an early age. As a young woman, she was drawn to the energy of New York’s entertainment scene, particularly its music, club and dance cultures. These influences would eventually shape her career as a performer and broadcaster.
After completing her education, she moved towards a professional career in entertainment, combining her interest in music with an emerging talent for performance and presentation.
Before becoming a television personality, Michelle Visage established herself in the music industry. In the early 1990s, she became a member of the dance-pop group Seduction, which achieved success with songs including Two to Make It Right. The group’s sound reflected the era’s energetic dance music, combining catchy melodies with club-oriented production.
Following her time with Seduction, Visage continued working in music and collaborated with other artists. She was also associated with The S.O.U.L. S.Y.S.T.E.M., a music project that achieved success with its cover of It’s Gonna Be a Lovely Day, featured on the soundtrack to The Bodyguard.
Her experience in the music industry provided a foundation for her later work in radio and television. It also helped establish the confident performance style that would become one of her defining characteristics.
Visage subsequently developed a successful career as a radio presenter, working on stations in New York and Los Angeles. Her broadcasting work allowed her to connect with audiences through music, interviews and entertainment commentary.
Her major television breakthrough came when she joined RuPaul’s Drag Race as a judge in 2011. The programme, which celebrates drag performance and competition, became an international phenomenon, introducing drag culture to wider audiences.
As a judge, Visage became known for her straightforward feedback, emphasis on performance skills and attention to the contestants’ ability to develop their own identities. Her dynamic with host RuPaul and fellow judges helped establish the programme’s recognisable format.
She has also appeared in international editions and spin-offs of the franchise, including RuPaul’s Drag Race UK and RuPaul’s Drag Race All Stars. Her involvement has extended beyond judging to hosting, presenting and participating in related television projects.
In 2015, Visage won the British reality competition Celebrity Big Brother, further increasing her public profile in the United Kingdom.
Beyond television and radio, Visage has explored writing and live performance. Her memoir, The Diva Rules: Ditch the Drama, Find Your Strength, and Sparkle Your Way to the Top, published in 2015, shares lessons drawn from her professional experiences and personal philosophy.
She has also participated in theatre productions, podcasts and live entertainment events, demonstrating her versatility across different formats.
Michelle Visage is married to David Case, and they have two daughters. She has frequently spoken about her family and her longstanding support for LGBTQ+ communities. Her work on RuPaul’s Drag Race has made her an influential figure within drag entertainment and its international fan community.
Michelle Visage continues to work across television, radio, live performance and brand collaborations. Her appointment as the face of Penhaligon’s Making Scents of It campaign adds luxury fragrance to her broad portfolio.
