Pierluigi Collina is widely regarded as one of the greatest football referees in history. Born on 13 February 1960 in Bologna, Italy, he became internationally recognised not only for his exceptional officiating but also for his distinctive appearance, including his shaved head and piercing gaze.

Collina initially studied economics before becoming interested in refereeing during the late 1970s. His natural authority, fitness and thorough understanding of football laws allowed him to progress rapidly through the Italian refereeing system.

He officiated his first Serie A match in 1991 and soon became one of Europe's leading referees. Throughout the 1990s and early 2000s, Collina took charge of many of football's most important fixtures, earning widespread praise for his calm decision-making and ability to manage high-pressure situations.

Among the highlights of his career were officiating the 1999 UEFA Champions League Final between Manchester United and Bayern Munich and the 2002 FIFA World Cup Final between Brazil and Germany. His consistent performances earned him the FIFA World's Best Referee award on six consecutive occasions.

Collina became respected for allowing matches to flow while maintaining firm control over players.
