Nicola Adams biography

Nicola Adams is the first woman in history to win a gold medal in Women’s Boxing, coming at the Olympics in 2012. And she is Great Britain’s most decorated female boxer. She was also the first British woman to win a major boxing title with a victory at the 2011 European Championships. She qualified for the London Olympics by virtue of her performance at the 2012 World Championships in Quinhuangdao, China where she overcame five-time World Champion Mery Kom of India. She is also the 2012 European Champion at 51kg and a three-time World Championships silver medallist.

Nicola Adams started boxing at the age of twelve and had her first bout a year later. Nicola fought (and won) her first bout at age 13, but it was four years before she found a second opponent. In 2001 she became the first woman boxer ever to represent England, in a fight against an Irish boxer.

In 2007 Adams was the first English female to win a medal in a major tournament, taking silver in the bantamweight (54kg) division at the European Championships in Denmark.

In 2008 she became the first English woman to earn a medal in the AIBA Women’s World Championships in Ningbo, China, when she narrowly missed out on gold to the Polish world number one, Karolina Michalczuk.

Following this success Nicola Adams faced a debilitating back injury for nearly year but she slowly recovered and in March 2010 she was selected to be part of the first ever women’s GB Boxing squad, training towards London 2012.

In September 2010 she picked up her second silver medal at the AIBA Women’s World Championships, this time losing-out to Chinese boxer Cancan Ren. In October 2011, Nicola won Great Britain’s first ever women’s gold at a major Championship when she beat Sarah Ourahmoune of France, 15-8, in the final of the European Championships in Rotterdam.

London 2012

In the 2012 Summer Olympics, Nicola Adams defeated Mary Kom from India in the flyweight semifinal. She went on to defeat Chinese boxer and world number one Ren Cancan in the final to claim the first Olympic women’s boxing gold medal in history.
