Award-winning actor best known for his role as Sheldon Cooper in the CBS sitcom The Big Bang Theory.

Biography

Jim was born in Houston, Texas, and raised in the northern suburb of Spring. His love of acting started at age six when he played the role of the Kola-Kola bird in a school production of the Elephant’s Child. Later, during his junior year, he appeared in an adaptation of the English play Noises Off, a role that heavily influenced his decision to pursue a career as an actor.

Whilst at the University of Houston, Jim became a founding member of Infernal Bridegroom Productions and regularly performed at the Stages Repertory Theatre. After enrolling in graduate school at the University of San Diego in 1999, Jim was accepted onto a two-year course in classical theatre, despite reservations from program directors who were worried that Jim’s unique personality would not translate well to the stage; however, on merit of his indubitable talent, Jim was one of seven students to secure a place, graduating in 2001 and then moving to New York.

In New York he worked in Off-Broadway productions and made several television appearances; he had a recurring role on the television show Judging Amy and starred in the television series Ed, as well as film roles in Garden State and School for Scoundrels.

Growing up Jim was influenced by sitcoms (particularly Three’s Company, Family Ties, and The Cosby Show) and, before securing a big role, he auditioned for many different television pilots and on many occasions being cast, but with none of the shows being able to find a television network willing to purchase it. The exception, and Jim’s big break, came with The Big Bang Theory. After reading the pilot script, Jim felt that the role of Sheldon Cooper would be a great fit for him.

In his audition for the show, Jim so impressed series creator Chuck Lorre that Lorre insisted on a second audition to see if Jim could replicate the performance. The character of Sheldon Cooper requires Jim to use every part of his body, from the way he walks, gestures with his hands, cocks his head, to the way he manipulates his facial features. Jim credits his University of San Diego training for giving him the tools to breath theatrical life into Sheldon’s lines.

In 2009 Jim won the Television Critics Association award for individual achievement in comedy. He has won four Emmy awards (in 2010, 2011, 2013 and 2014) for Outstanding Lead Actor in a Comedy Series and, in 2011, won the Golden Globe award for Best Actor in a Television Series for Comedy.

His performance as Sheldon in The Big Bang Theory has led to bigger Hollywood roles and, in 2011, he appeared with Jack Black, Owen Wilson, Steve Martin, and Rashida Jones in the comedy film The Big Year, and, in the same year, made his Broadway debut portraying Tommy Boatwright in the play The Normal Heart.

Jim voiced one of the lead roles in the DreamWorks Animation comedy film Home, alongside Rihanna and, in 2015, it was announced that he would star as God in the Broadway production of An Act of God.
