After Dinner Speakers: Terry Griffiths, Robert Kilroy-Silk, Doctor Hook
Terry Griffiths' snooker career peaked just as Welsh sporting achievements elsewhere were plentiful. April 1979 saw Wales thrash England 27-3 to win their fourth successive Triple Crown, and Terry won the finals of the World Professional championships.
Although he'd been playing snooker since he was a teenager (he won the Llanelli and District championship at the age of 16), when Terry Griffiths first took part in the world championships it was only the second time he'd played in a professional event. On this first outing he beat Dennis Taylor 24 frames to 16.
A few months later he reached the UK final, but lost to John Virgo. He went on to win the Masters and the Irish Masters, but lost his world title to Steve Davis.
In 1982 Terry claimed the UK title after beating Alex 'Hurricane' Higgins, clinching victory after a tense deciding frame.
Following this Terry won the Welsh championship in 1985 and 1986. It was to prove a fateful year - he made it into only his second world championship final, but again it was Steve Davis that beat him.
These days his skills as a coach are highly prized and he has helped some of the top names in the sport today.
In 1999 he launched a Welsh Junior Snooker Academy.
