Roger Meddows Taylor was born in 1949 in Kings Lynn; his first musical experiences were as a chorister at the Truro Cathedral School, where he joined the choir. He also learnt to play the ukulele. In 1961 he began to teach himself to play drums. Joining Brian May in his band Smile in 1968 he signed his first record deal in 1969. Freddie Bulsara was an early fan and when Smile broke up Freddie joined them to form one of the most successful rock bands in history. Together with John Deacon on Bass, Queen became uniquely recognisable and popular throughout the world, Roger always had a significant writing input to albums despite most recognition going to Freddie Mercry and Brian May.
