Sir Leon Brittan was Vice President of the European Commission until earlier this year when his term as a Commissioner, came to an end. Sir Leon was appointed to the European Commission in 1989. Educated at Haberdashers' Aske's School, Trinity College Cambridge and Yale, He was knighted in 1989. In 1974 he entered Parliament as Member for Cleveland and Whitby. Following the general election in 1979, Sir Leon was appointed Minister of State at the Home Office. In 1981 he joined the Cabinet as Chief Secretary to the Treasury became Home Secretary in 1983 and was Secretary of State for Trade & Industry from 1985 to 1986. In 1983 Sir Leon was elected MP for Richmond, North Yorkshire, where he remained until 1989 His interests include hill walking, cricket and opera. Sir Leon has many interesting stories to tell of Thatcher governments and Brussels bureaucracy.
