A former member of the Treasury’s Panel of Independent Forecasters (the so-called “Wise Men”) and various other government advisory bodies, he now sits on the Management Board of Ofgem, the energy regulator. He has published widely in the field of international macroeconomics and economic policy. He is a longstanding member of the Labour Party, formerly chaired the Executive Committee of Charter88, and since October 1996 has sat on the Labour benches in the House of Lords.
