After Dinner Speakers: Lester Piggott, John Lenahan, Candace Bushnell

Lester Piggott, born in Newmarket in 1935, has been, and will continue being for many years, the most famous and the best British jockey of all times. He was known as Old Stoneface, because his face seemed never to show any emotion. A sufferer from speech problems and deafness he appeared to be an uncommunicative person. He rode his first winner in 1948 when he was only 12 years old, and from then his career was unstoppable, being the winner of the leading jockey mantle on 11 occasions. He holds the record for the most British Classic Races won, a total of 30, including 9 Derbys between 1954 and 1983. Convicted and imprisoned for tax evasion towards the end of his riding career, Lester can say much about the intriguing world of horse racing.
