Helmut Schmidt was born in 1918, after a successful career in the German Civil Service he was elected to the Bundestag in 1953 and again in1965. Becoming the chairman of the Social Democratic Party he served in various government posts including Minister for Domestic Affairs; Minister of Defence; Minister for Finance and then ultimately as Chancellor of the Federal Republic of Germany between 1974 and 1982. Since his retirement from politics he has been a successful publisher of Die Zeit in Hamburg. Helmut Schmidt is uniquely positioned to offer presentations on European Politics and Economics.
