After Dinner Speakers: David Coulthard, Ice Cube, Allan Lamb
Hailing from Scotland and one of Britain’s most successful ever Motor Racing drivers; David Coulthard’s achievements in his sport are legion. They include Scottish Junior Kart champion 1983, 1984 and 1985, Scottish Open and British Super 1 Kart champion 1986 and 1987 and Scottish Open Kart champion 1988 all before he graduated to Formula racing. Working his way up via Formula Three he demonstrated good performances in the British Vauxhall Lotus Challenge and the Grand Prix at Silverstone in 1990, coming second in the British Formula Three Championships of 1991. He went on to win the Macáu Grand Prix and the Marlboro Masters of Europe Race in 1991, coming ninth in the European Formula 3000 Championship of 1992 and third in 1993.
Coulthard was soon snapped up by Williams to become a test driver in 1993 and 1994 before making his Formula One debut in 1994. He drove for the Williams-Renault team 1994 and again signed for Williams-Renault for the 1995 season. He moved on to sign for McLaren International Ltd (now McLaren-Mercedes) driving for them in 1996, 1997, 1998 (when he finished 3rd in the Drivers' Championship), 1999, 2000 (3rd in the Drivers' Championship again) and 2001 seasons. David Coulthard’s Formula One career so far boasts 11 Grand Prix wins (including the British Grand Prix in 1999 and 2000); 13 pole positions; the McLaren Autosport Young Driver of the Year award in 1990, ITV/Panasonic Young Sports Personality of the Year award in 1994 and Daily Express Scottish Sports Personality of the Year award in 1994.
Generally acknowledged a ‘nice bloke’, ‘The Flying Scotsman’ is a great ambassador for his sport and his personality makes him a huge success when he is asked to make personal appearances.
