Like him or loathe him, Alex Higgins was instrumental in taking the game of snooker to a new dimension.
From the moment he left his native shores in Belfast and came to England, Alex was massive box office, creating huge interest wherever he went. From the outset he was a promotable commodity, playing with a flair and creativity that excited the public and generated widespread interest.
At the first attempt he won the snooker world championships, defeating John Spencer 37-32. He was the youngest ever snooker world champion, winning a few days after his 23rd birthday.
His style of play was unique, his approach charasmatic. Many youngsters were inspired by the manner in which he played, not least Jimmy White another player who would become one of the fans favourite.
