After Dinner Speakers: Tall Paul, Billy Ocean, Tom Farmer

b. Paul Newman, 5 May 1971, London, England. Unlike Fat Tony, at 6 feet 6 inches, Paul Newman is certainly a DJ who fully deserves his moniker. His DJing career began at the age of 16 in 1987 when he was allowed behind the decks at his father's club, Turnmills in Farringdon, London. By 1990, his considerable skill was self-evident and he became resident at the ground-breaking gay night, Trade. Newman released his first recording, "Love Rush", as a white label for Trade. Christened "Tall" Paul by Hooj Choons' Red Jerry, they recorded "Rock Da House" together. Re-released in 1997 on VC Recordings, the track reached number 11 in the UK singles chart. His increasingly high profile as an in-demand club DJ has led to remix work for artists including New Order, Stone Roses, East 17, Erasure, Human League, Marc Almond, Wildchild, Dario G., Duran Duran, Nalin And Kane, Blondie and Bizarre Inc. Newman has mixed many compilation albums, including those for the label Fantazia, Cream (Anthems with Seb Fontaine) and the Ministry Of Sound (Dance Nation Six with Brandon Block). He tours as a DJ in countries such as the USA and Japan but still makes regular appearances at UK clubs such as The Gallery, Gatecrasher, Godskitchen, Progress, Sundissential, Cream, and The Sanctuary. His DJing style is versatile: he can move from the more obviously "up-front" vocal house, through hard house, to trance-inflected material. He has also had success with his own singles, especially as Camisra, with "Let Me Show You", a massive club hit that entered the national UK charts at number 5, and "Feel The Beat". Newman remains highly popular as a DJ but his entrepreneurial skills have led to the building of his own studio and the establishing of a record label, Duty Free Recordings. The single releases on the label, including those by Robbie Rivera and Radical Playaz, have been well received by the critics. Newman also hosts a show on UK radio station Kiss 100 FM with Fontaine. His achievements were officially recognized in 1998 when he won the Ericsson Muzik Dance Award for Best UK DJ.
