Senator George Mitchell was the US Senate Majority Leader and led the ratification of the NAFTA, North American Free Trade Agreement, before accepting the invitation of the British and Irish governments to chair the peace talks in Northern Ireland. He remains Chairman of the Northern Ireland Fund for Reconstruction and continues to work for peace in the province.
