Rupert Pennant-Rea has spoken at management conferences for many of the world’s leading companies, including IBM, General Electric, Citibank, Philip Morris, British Telecom, McGraw-Hill, Arthur Andersen and Xerox. He is also a frequent speaker at public conferences. His subjects range across all the major economic financial and political themes.After a career with the Confederation of Irish Industry, the General and Municipal Workers Union, and the Bank of England, Rupert Pennant-Rea joined The Economist in 1977 and became Editor from 1986 to 1993. He was appointed Deputy Governor of the Bank of England in 1993. He was appointed Chairman of the merchant bank Caspian in 1995, and then became Chairman of The Stationery Office, formerly Her Majesty’s Stationery Office, following privatisation. In 1997 he became chairman of Plantation & General Investments Plc and in 1998 chairman of Key Asset Management Limited. Rupert Pennant-Rea is also a non-executive Director of BAT Industries, Gordon House Asset Management, Dewe Rogerson, and Sherritt International in Canada, developers of emerging markets, and the largest foreign investor in Cuba. He is a member of the Group of Thirty and the Trinity Foundation, and is a consultant for the World Bank.
