After Dinner Speakers: Ray Clemence, Shalamar, Eddie Edwards
Born in Skegness, where his first job was that of deck chair attendant, Clemence went on to become one of the most outstanding goalkeepers to wear an England shirt.
His football career started at his home town club, Skegness. After a trial period at Notts County, he moved on to Scunthorpe United, where he played until Bill Shankly paid £18,000.00 to take him to Liverpool. After breaking into the first team at Liverpool, he went on to play in 665 games and won win five League Championships, three European Cups, two UEFA Cups, two FA Cups, one Super Cup, one League Cup and seven Charity Shields.
In 1981, Clemence moved to Tottenham, Hotspur, where he won the FA and Uefa Cup again.
Clemence gained 61 caps for England, and would surely have gained even more, had it not been for Peter Shilton.
Ray Clemence has also been honoured with an MBE for services to football.
