Nicholas Witchell joined the BBC as a graduate news trainee in 1976 after completing a Bachelor of Laws degree at Leeds University. As a reporter he has been on the news scene in Northern Ireland where he covered the assassination of Earl Mountbattan and the IRA hunger strikes. He was heavily involved in the coverage of the Falklands conflict and the wars in Beirut and the Lebanon
In September 1984 he was, with Sue Lawley, one of the founding presenters of BBC Television’s Six O’clock News he later became the main presenter of the re-launched BBC Breakfast News.
He is currently a BBC Diplomatic Correspondent, reporting on world affairs, and continues as one of the presenters of the major network news programmes for the BBC.
