Nelson Mandella was a leading black activist in South Africa and founder of the African National Congress when he was charged with serious offences against the State and jailed for life. 27 years later he was pardoned by the then President F W de Klerk and was freed from Devils Island to a Hero's welcome. He later became the first black President of the Republic of South Africa and was jointly awarded the Nobel Peace Prize with F W de Klerk. Since his retirement in 1999 he has lived quietly with his new wife in South Africa but from time to time will accept very special invitations to attend important international events.
