After Dinner Speakers: Mark Goodier, Jarvis Cocker, Aretha Franklin

Mark Goodier is best known for his professional presentation of the Radio 1 Top 40 Chart rundown on Sundays, which he first presented initially for 18 months during 1991/1992 and then permanently from April 1995 following Bruno Brookes' departure. (Bruno Brookes always referred to Mark on-air as Mark 'Goodybags'). His voice also announced the chart rundown on BBC TV's weekly Top of the Pops show, until 2003. Mark was born in Salisbury, Rhodesia (now Zimbabwe) in 1961, later moving with his family to North Wales and then to Edinburgh, Scotland. It was in Edinburgh that Mark first became fascinated by the idea of working in broadcasting. He ran a 'mobile disco', until commencing as a presenter on a local Scottish radio station, Radio Forth in 1980. Following this, he worked for five other local stations until December 1987, when he started on Radio 1 presenting the late night show. In 1988 and 1989 Mark played a variety of shows; Drive, Weekend Breakfast, deputising on the early show, Breakfast Show and for Pete Tong. In 1990 Mark helped develop The Evening Session. He presented the Breakfast Show on Radio 1 for three months from October 1993, then the mid-afternoon slot in 1994 and the drive - time slot 1995 until February 1997. Mark has presented for a week on Radio 2 weekday mornings, covering for the absence of Jimmy Young in the Spring of 2002 and Ken Bruce in Autumn 2002. In April 2002 Mark was forced to lay off 31 workers after he placed his Wise Buddha production company into liquidation. The BBC announced in August 2002 that Mark will be leaving Radio 1 in December. Mark stated in an interview that he'd had "a great time at Radio 1 but felt that his 15-year anniversary was a good time to move on" and that there will be a "new look chart and presenter who is yet to be confirmed". Mark also said he would like to present a show on BBC Radio 2. Mark reported to newspapers "its very important to have a challenge and I don't want to always be known as the guy who did the Radio 1 chart and only the Radio 1 chart." The DJ's last Radio 1 chart show was on Sunday 17.11.02. The programme was a special edition due to the Official Charts 50th anniversary, and included Robbie Williams playing live. Mark signed off by thanking his support staff and playing this jingle, which he had not used on the Sunday chart show before (to my knowledge). It was publicised in Dec 2002 that Mark Goodier was to join Classic FM to present a chart countdown, however he also went on to present the brand new Smash Hits Chart at 4.00pm-7.00pm every Sunday - the same time as both the Radio 1 and ILR Charts are broadcast.
