From the moment he left his native shores in Belfast and came to England, Alex was massive box office, creating huge interest wherever he went. From the outset he was a promotable commodity, playing with a flair and creativity that excited the public and generated widespread interest. At the first attempt he won the snooker world championships, defeating John Spencer 37-32. He was the youngest ever snooker world champion, winning a few days after his 23rd birthday.
