After Dinner Speakers: Adrian Walsh, Brahms & Liszt, Jo Guest
Adrian’s research interests are concentrated in political philosophy and applied ethics. In the area of political philosophy he is concerned with questions of the limits of the market, social justice and the nature of work. In applied ethics he is interested in a range of issues, including the morality of genetic engineering, new reproductive technologies and the commercialisation of natural resources. He is also interested in methodological issues in ethics, in particular, the issue of what role general moral principles should play in determining one’s response to practical moral issues. Adrian, an expatriate Victorian, has been at UNE since 1997. Prior to that he worked in the Philosophy Department at the University of Wollongong where he taught applied ethics and political philosophy. He lives on the outskirts of the small New England town of Uralla where he tunes his short wave radio to listen to AFL broadcasts in the vain hope of hearing that Geelong has won a flag. He is the Discipline of Philosophy’s Honours and Post-graduate Coordinator. With Tony Lynch he is the joint book review editor of the Australasian Journal of Philosophy. He is also a Research Associate with the Centre for Applied Philosophy and Public Ethics at the University of Melbourne.
