Are the days of David Beckham and Beyonce sporting an ice cold cola over?
Certainly not, but since Ofcom imposed new rules for junk food advertising directed at children surely we are seeing fewer stars in advertising?
Think again.
But now, to hire a celebrity these days for an advertising contract it’s all got to be ethical, right?
Yeah right!
The fact is the number of food ads featuring celebrities has fallen during children’s programming.
But the number of celebrity food ads at other times of day has apparently increased which means that children’s overall exposure is still high.
So should companies use celebrities and sportsmen for advertising their junk food products?
Jessica Mitchell, director of The Food Commission, said: “It doesn’t seem too much to ask that they use their influence more positively rather than just to line their own pockets.
“Maybe the Government should step in and ban celebrities from promoting junk food.
“It is one avenue that has been suggested and maybe should be looked at further.”
But of whom would we ask this ethical approach? The pop-stars, celebrities, sports personalities, or the giant corporations who hire them? Isn’t the reality that most people will do anything for money?
I wonder what kinds of foods these stars feed their own children.
Can we expect celebrities like the Beckhams to say “no” to these junk food adverts when their own children regularly eat hot-dogs, pizza and candy-floss? So it seems they don’t see the harm in that. As so many parents would probably agree, judging by the junk food sales figures.
And isn’t that the real answer. Parents must make the right choices regardless of who’s advertising what. So the real question is: how to best inform parents, to make those choices? (READ MORE)
